Former Great British Bake Off winner Georgina Grasso has spoken candidly about her recent diagnosis with bipolar disorder and autism, revealing that she is still coming to terms with the news.

Grasso, from Carmarthenshire, initially spoke about living with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) during her time on the show, where she became the first ever Welsh Bake Off champion. However, a new diagnosis has revealed that she has bipolar 2 and autism instead of ADHD.

In an Instagram post, Grasso expressed her gratitude for the public's reaction to her ADHD diagnosis, describing it as "incredible". However, she admitted that the new diagnosis has left her feeling "completely overwhelmed" and uncertain about her identity.

"I'm not sure who I am right now, and scared to be judged even more so," she wrote.

Grasso's doctor first mentioned the possibility of a misdiagnosis last year, but she initially dismissed the idea. However, after reflecting on her symptoms and history, she began to realize that the new diagnosis made sense.

The former nurse, who has since become a content creator, is now taking new medication in an effort to manage her condition and maintain her workload. She expressed her desire to continue supporting her family and pursuing her career, but acknowledged that the consistency required for filming had made her question whether she could keep up.

Grasso called on her followers with experience with bipolar to share their advice and thanked them for their support. "Thank you for being here! I need you now more than ever," she wrote.

## Understanding Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood changes, according to the NHS. This can include high moods, such as feeling very happy or energetic, and low moods, such as feeling sad or hopeless. The condition can be challenging to diagnose due to its varying symptoms and the fact that it can be similar to other mental health conditions.

## Misdiagnosis and Overlapping Traits

The charity Bipolar UK notes that bipolar disorder and ADHD often have overlapping traits, which can lead to misdiagnosis. This can result in individuals not receiving the correct treatment, support, or knowledge to manage their symptoms.

Grasso's experience highlights the importance of being truthful with healthcare professionals about one's history and symptoms. She credits this honesty as the "turning point" in her diagnosis.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, help and support are available via the BBC Action Line.
