Christian metal band Demon Hunter has launched a trademark lawsuit against Netflix, alleging that the streaming platform's KPop Demon Hunters franchise is causing significant consumer confusion and threatening the band's long-established brand.

The lawsuit, filed by the band's company Hyde Lane, claims that Netflix's global concert tour, film, and merchandise for KPop Demon Hunters create an "almost complete overlap" with Demon Hunter's offerings. The band argues that this has led to substantial confusion among consumers, including instances where fans mistakenly purchased Demon Hunter concert tickets believing they were for the KPop film.

## Allegations of Consumer Confusion

The legal complaint highlights several examples of confusion, including an email from a parent who reportedly spent $500 on Demon Hunter concert tickets in New York, thinking it was a child-friendly KPop show for their children. Additionally, a television producer allegedly contacted the band's management, believing they were related to KPop Demon Hunters. Social media posts have also incorrectly tagged Demon Hunter when discussing the film.

## Trademark Dispute

Demon Hunter's company registered the "Demon Hunter" trademark for recorded music and merchandise in 2022 and has applied for a trademark related to live music. Meanwhile, Netflix has registered "Kpop Demon Hunters" for various merchandise uses, with other applications pending.

The band's lawsuit seeks to prevent Netflix from using the KPop Demon Hunters name for recorded music, live shows, and merchandise, and to award unspecified damages. The complaint states that the brand Hyde Lane has built over 25 years now faces an "existential crisis," necessitating legal action.

## KPop Demon Hunters' Success

KPop Demon Hunters, which began as a 2025 animated film following the K-pop girl group Huntr/X, has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. The film is the most-watched original title in Netflix history and won best animated film and best original song for Golden at the 2026 Golden Globes and Oscars. A sequel is in the works, and Netflix is reportedly considering other follow-up projects, including a television series and stage musical.
