Next James Bond Actor Announcement Expected Soon
The search for the next James Bond is in its final stages, with an announcement potentially due by year's end.
The next actor to play James Bond could be revealed before the end of the year. According to producer Amy Pascal, speaking to Deadline, "the end of the year is a good bet" for an announcement regarding the iconic spy role.
Amazon MGM Studios, which now controls the franchise, confirmed the casting process was underway in May. Entertainment writer Daniel Richtman claimed last month on social media that the team is in the final round of casting and "might have already found their guy." Journalist Jeff Sneider echoed this, suggesting the final candidate may not be one of the publicly discussed frontrunners.
The Contenders
A familiar list of actors has been linked to the role for months. These names have included Henry Cavill, Harris Dickinson, Jacob Elordi, Jack Lowden, James Norton, Jack O'Connell, Callum Turner, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
More recent reports have added other names to the speculation. Variety reported earlier this year that stage actor Tom Francis had auditioned. In late August, Page Six claimed that auditions would continue, listing 'Gladiator 2' star Paul Mescal and 'Heartstopper' actor Jack Barton as also being on the list. The so-called "Aussie" frontrunner referenced by Sneider is widely believed to be Jacob Elordi.
The Audition Process
The audition process is traditionally elaborate. Potential Bonds are often asked to perform a specific scene from 'From Russia With Love,' where Bond finds Tatiana Romanova in his bed. Former Bond director Martin Campbell told Gold Derby this scene tests for an "effortless" quality, covering presence, movement, and charisma without reliance on action sequences.
The 007 production team has stated that screen tests are full-scale affairs. They involve hair and makeup, costumes, sets, and other actors to gauge how an auditionee will appear on screen.
The Next Film
Little is confirmed about the next Bond film. 'Peaky Blinders' creator Steven Knight is writing the script, and 'Dune' director Denis Villeneuve is set to direct. The title remains unknown, though four unused Ian Fleming story titles remain: 'The Hildebrand Rarity,' 'Risico,' '007 in New York,' and 'The Property of a Lady.'
It has been widely reported that the film is likely for release in 2028. If true, this would create the longest gap between Bond films, exceeding the six years and four months between 1989's 'Licence to Kill' and 1995's 'GoldenEye.'
Future Plans and a Reboot
With Amazon's significant investment-purchasing MGM for $8.5 billion and paying at least $20 million more for creative control of Bond-long-term planning is expected. The studio may explore multi-film arcs and release schedules, while being cautious not to oversaturate the market with spin-offs.
The next film is rumored to be a reboot. This approach would sidestep the conclusive ending of 2021's 'No Time to Die,' which saw Daniel Craig's Bond apparently killed. The classic promise that "James Bond will return" remains the franchise's reassurance to fans.
