Rockstar Games unveils extended Grand Theft

Rockstar Games has released a 26-minute extended preview of Grand Theft Auto 6. The footage debuted on Netflix on Thursday, six hours before appearing on YouTube, giving fans their first detailed look at the game since its initial announcement over 18 months ago.

The preview montage, shown without commentary, highlighted improved graphics, detailed environments, and classic series action like car chases and shoot-outs. This official showcase followed a week of unauthorised gameplay leaks, which the developer described as "heartbreaking."

The Bonnie and Clyde duo

The footage extensively featured the game's dual protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Camino. Their relationship forms the core of the game's "Bonnie and Clyde" narrative. According to a preview published on IGN, the developers stated the characters' story can be shaped by player actions, though players can also "opt out" of deepening their bond.

While the Netflix video did not detail this system, it did demonstrate the ability to switch control between Jason and Lucia during gameplay. One scene showed Jason lowering Lucia from a window during an escape from a drug bust. A similar character-switching mechanic was used in Grand Theft Auto 5.

A visual and scale leap

Reaction to the game's graphics was overwhelmingly positive. Characters display photorealistic faces and lifelike movements. Environments, including apartment interiors, rooftop bars, and clubs, were highly detailed. The preview also showcased the diverse regions of Leonida, the fictional Florida-inspired state where the game is set, which includes the Miami-inspired Vice City.

Many online observers praised the uncommon variety of body shapes and sizes among background characters. Journalist Ryan McCaffrey claimed GTA 6 "might be the best-looking game I've ever seen." This visual fidelity is attributed to Rockstar's lengthy development time and its reportedly massive budget.

Reports also suggest a significantly larger game map. YouTuber TGG, who says he was invited to Rockstar North's Edinburgh headquarters, stated the developer told him the map was twice the size of GTA 5's. Rockstar has not officially confirmed this.

Core series hallmarks remain

Despite its advances, the preview confirmed Grand Theft Auto 6 retains the series' essential DNA. Viewers saw armed heists, car chases, and criminal underworld scenes. The game continues to feature satirical swipes at US culture, darkly comic interactions, and a vast array of side activities.

Rockstar also appears to have expanded on systems from its last major release, 2018's Red Dead Redemption 2. This includes an "honour" system affecting the player's reputation. The series, estimated to have sold half a billion copies since 1997, looks set to continue its tradition.

The online question

Rockstar has previously stated GTA 6 will be a "single-player experience" at launch. The Netflix preview focused solely on story and gameplay, with no mention of a multiplayer component. The long-term success of the title may hinge on how Rockstar later converts players to a new online mode, following the phenomenal ongoing success of GTA Online.

Grand Theft Auto 5 broke records at its 2013 launch and has sold over 200 million copies. GTA Online remains one of the world's most-played games and is thought to have generated billions for Rockstar. The two official trailers for GTA 6 have nearly 500 million combined views on YouTube.

Rockstar is scheduled to appear at an employment tribunal in Scotland next month. It will defend itself against claims it illegally sacked ex-employees for trying to form a union. The company strongly denies the accusations, stating the workers were fired for gross misconduct.
