Google's Sophie Neary Warns Retailers
Google's Sophie Neary advises retailers to prepare for the peak shopping season by October, highlighting YouTube's 40 billion hours of shopping content

Sophie Neary, managing director for retail and FMCG at Google, states the peak retail season now effectively begins around Amazon Prime Day in October. Retailers must be ready by then to capture consumer demand.
Google observes consumers watching substantial shopping-related content on YouTube starting in October. Last year, the public watched 40 billion hours of such content globally. That figure represents approximately 4.5 million years of videos like unboxings, hauls, and tutorials.
Neary explains the urgency. "The fact that that is starting in October means that retailers really need to be ready to capture all of that demand as it’s getting earlier and earlier," she said. Waiting until October might mean missing key opportunities.
YouTube's Christmas Ad Phenomenon
Contrary to assumptions about ad fatigue, Neary says interest in Christmas advertising remains high. The most searched Christmas-related term on YouTube in the UK is 'Christmas ads'.
YouTube operates a leaderboard for brand Christmas ad performance, awarding prizes for the most viewed, liked, and commented-on ads. Neary notes the leaderboard generated over 2 billion views for adverts on YouTube last year. This includes both short ads and longer content.
Balancing Ads and Viewer Experience
Neary emphasizes that YouTube is primarily a content platform with evergreen material. However, she says it offers a unique advantage for advertisers.
They can integrate their content around the viewer experience seamlessly. Research by Google shows viewers are favorably predisposed to ads on their favorite creators' content, understanding it supports the creators.
"People watching their favourite creators are actually favourably predisposed to having adverts because they know that their creators make money off the back of that," Neary explained.
Capturing Sales Around the Clock
A major piece of advice from Google is for retailers not to shut shop early. Online shopping operates 24/7, with around one billion people shopping across Google's search and YouTube platforms daily.
Google Maps also drives significant traffic, with finding a nearby shop being the second most common use after navigation. Neary discusses helping retailers follow the ebb and flow of consumer demand to be present when people are searching.
She contrasts this with her past experience at Boots, where fixed search budgets and stock shortages could divert sales to competitors. Today, Google Search allows businesses to specify a desired return on investment, with AI handling the optimization.
Making Every Surface Shoppable
A key development for this year, according to Neary, is transforming YouTube into a direct purchasing platform. The goal is to make every surface shoppable.
The platform now supports various shoppable ad formats. These are detailed in the table below.
Neary states that if last year was about using AI to reinvent search, this year is about using YouTube to reinvent shopping. Consumer experience remains the platform's most important focus.
